In this standard, students will demonstrate the meaning of exponents to write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole number exponents. Students will recognize that an expression with a variable represents the same mathematics (i.e. x can be written as x*x*x*x*x) and write algebraic expressions from. Order of operations is introduced throughout elementary grades, including the use of grouping symbols, (), {}, [], etc. in 5th grade. Order of operations with exponents is the focus in 6th grade.
